In the News: Cosmetic and Wellness Procedure Fatalities

Several outlets have reported this summer on deaths in the context of cosmetic, wellness, and anti-aging procedures.

Here are some of the stories making headlines:

Plasmapheresis and Longevity

In September, Kathimerini reported that the Greek Health Ministry planned to “create a regulatory framework for longevity, rejuvenation, and anti-aging services” after the death of a Greek celebrity.

Euronews reported that the singer suffered a cardiac arrest after going to a scheduled plasmapheresis appointment at a private medical practice.

According to Euronews, authorities were working to clarify “what exactly happened before the cardiac arrest and whether the scheduled treatment had begun.”

Multiple-Cosmetic-Surgery Deaths

The Daily Mail reported in August that a 51-year-old woman in Brazil passed away following a six-in-one cosmetic surgery.

Days earlier, the Daily Mail had also reported separately on the death of a 33-year-old Brazilian influencer after a three-in-one plastic surgery.

IV Infusion Collapse

In July, NBC 5 DFW reported that a doctor and a med spa owner in Texas were charged with murder in the 2023 death of a patient.

The outlet reported that the 47-year-old patient collapsed during an IV infusion.

Anti-Aging Injection Death

In July, CBS News reported that a 27-year-old woman had died after receiving an NAD+ injection at a Bronx lifestyle center.

The New York Daily News reported that NAD+ boosters “ha[d] become popular among the celebrity set.”
